In 2012 the San Diego Chargers finished one game below .500 with a 7-9 record and underachieved for the third straight year. That fact caused both the general manager and head coach their jobs this off-season. In 2013, the Mike McCoy era in San Diego begins. The Philip Rivers led offense will need a bounce-back season from Antonio Gates if they look to get back to the playoffs for the first time since 2009. Running back Ryan Matthews will also need to have a breakout season for the offense to remain balanced. The Chargers added 33-year-old Dwight Freeney to play linebacker and drafted Notre Dame product Manti Te'o to help shore up the defense. San Diego may be in rebuild mode with a new coach and many new pieces. They still have enough weaponry to compete, but they will need a few breakout seasons in order to fend off the up-and-coming Kansas City Chiefs.
