With the onset of 2002, the Arctic Monkeys were formed. They are an English band based in High Green, a suburb of Sheffield, England. Arctic Monkeys were noticeably one of the first bands to come to public attention via the Internet, with comments suggesting they stood for the vast possibility of a change in the way in which a new band could be promoted and marketed. As such, it was not until June 2003 that they played their first live show in Sheffield City Center namely The Grapes.
They are popularly known as the "Arctic Monkeys" but have sometimes also been known as the "Death Ramps". They have presented a variety of genres such as indie rock, garage rock, post-punk revival. The band is made up of Alex Turner – vocals, guitar, Matt Helders- drums, vocals, Jamie Cook– lead or rhythm guitar and Nick O'Malley on bass and backing vocals.
The Arctic Monkeys have released six studio albums, "Whatever People Say I Am" and "That Is What I Am Not" in 2006, "Favorite Worst Nightmare" in 2007, "Humbug" in 2009, "Suck It and See" in 2011, "AM" in 2013, and "Tranquility Base Hotel & Casino" in 2018, and one live album "At the Apollo" in 2008 to complete the list.
Their greatest popularity might be due to the reason that songs were burned into CDs and given away for free during live shows. These demos were a way for people to listen to their music and helped them build a great fan base that gradually made their albums to hit highest records in sales in the UK and elsewhere.
Awards were not scarce in their history, for they won seven Britt Awards, these included Best British Group, Best British Album as well as 3 Grammy Awards. In 2006 the band won the Mercury Prize for their debut album which was the fastest selling album by a band in the history of the UK.
The Arctic Monkeys have also been known to associate their acts with other bands or singers among which are Miles Kane, Iggy Pop, Queens of The Stone Age, Billy Ryder, Dead Sons, The Last Show Puppets, to mention just a few.
The band has gained worldwide fame, have taken part in festivals, and are not restricted to the UK anymore but have been known to record albums in the US as well as live shows as a band, and during associated acts with other bands or singers.
The Arctic Monkeys have changed styles and genres over the years but somehow, they keep coming up with something new that somehow manages to mix between a sense of humor, love ballads, news sounds, as well as the maturity that they have gained over the years. This has made them acquire a style that is uniquely theirs and has managed to make them gain an unexpected popularity.
They have the ability to intermingle old and new, and for those who have not had the experience to listen to them, they are missing a lot.
