Born on 8th October 1985, Peter Gene Hernandez, who is professionally known as Bruno Mars, is an American singer-songwriter, record producer, multi-instrumentalist and also a choreographer. He hails from Honolulu, Hawaii where he spent his initial years. Since his families were musicians, Mars began making music at a young age and would perform at various musical venues. He moved to Los Angeles after completing high school graduation so that he could pursue a musical career.
Mars career started to grow when he got dropped by Motown Records and then signed a recording contract with Atlantic Records in 2009. In the same year, he co-founded the production team The Smeezingtons which was responsible for the singles ‘Nothin on you’ by B.o.B and ‘Billionaire’ by Travie McCoy. He featured on these albums as well, thus being recognized as a solo artist. In the year 2010, his debut studio album Doo-wops & Hooligans were included in the U.S Billboard Hot 100 for his chart-topping singles ‘Just the way you are’ and ‘Grenade’ and also in the number four position for ‘The Lazy Song’. Mars second album, Unorthodox Jukebox which was released in 2012 peaked at number one position in the United States with chart-topping singles on the U.S Billboard Hot 100. His hits ‘Locked out of heaven’ and ‘when I was your man’ made it to the number 1 position and ‘Treasure’ followed in number 5th.
In the year 2014, Mars lent his vocals to Marc Ronson’s singles ‘Uptown Funk’ which topped not only in the US but also worldwide in Australia, Canada, New Zealand and the UK. His 3rd studio album, 24K Magic which was released in 2016 made successful singles like ‘24k Magic’ and ‘That’s what I like’. So, to date, Bruno Mars has sold over 115 million singles and 9 million albums worldwide thereby making him one of the best-selling artists of all time. It is also said that since Elvis Presley, none of the male artists than Bruno Mars has landed seven times in the number-one position on the Billboard Hot 100 in a very short span of time since his career was launched in 2010.
Mars music has been noted for displaying a wide variety of musical genres and styles which includes pop, rock, reggae, R&B, soul, and hip-hop. He claims to say that his work with other artists has influenced a lot in his music style. Other than being a singer and a songwriter, Mars is also able to play drums, guitar, keyboard, bass, and piano. Also famously known for his retro showmanship, Mars has been compared to Michael Jackson, who also had his own impeccable style.
Bruno Mars has earned numerous honors and awards throughout his career which included the most prestigious Grammy Awards. Mars has won five Grammy Awards, three Brit Awards, and three MTV Europe Music Awards. In the year 2011, Mars made his name in Time Magazine’s 100 lists. He was also considered as the sixth best songwriter in 2013 by Billboard. He is that only artist who has a song which features only piano and vocals to the top 100 list. Bruno Mars also performed during the halftime show for Super Bowl 50 on February 7, 2016, for guest acts and the video has been watched by a record of 111.9 million viewers making it one of the most watched halftime shows in NFL history.
