The Goddess of Pop as she is popularly known, Cher, born Cherilyn Sarkisian has been active for nearly sixty years. She is distinct from the contralto voice that has made her dominate a purely male industry. Born in El Centro, California, US; she gained popularity in 1965 as half of the husband and wife duo with her husband – Sonny Bono. The rock band ‘Sonny and Cher’ had sold around 40 million records worldwide by 1967, becoming rock’s “It” couple. Nevertheless, Cher began her solo career at the same time and released her song ‘Bang Bang (My Baby Shot Me Down)’ which went on to become her first million-dollar seller song.
In the 1970s she became a television personality; appearing in two shows – The Sonny and Cher Comedy Hour (which went on for three years) and Cher. It was during her appearances in these shows that she became a trendsetter due to the outfits that she wore. While she worked in television, Cher established herself as a solo artist and the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart-topping singles ‘Gypsys, Tramps and Thieves’, ‘Half-Breed’, ‘Dark Lady’, among others were got released.
Versatile over the years, we have seen Cher as a singer, actress, author, businesswoman, comedian, dancer, fashion designer, model, philanthropist, record producer, songwriter, and television host. But she is popularly known in her most famous and loved occupation as a singer, and she has presented various genres like; rock, pop, dance, disco, and folk.
She went through a stage of decline in popularity that took her to the early 1980s and her film career breakthroughs with stardom in the early 1990s. She went on to manage both careers at the same time and achieved a commercial peak in 1998 with the album "Believe", its title track became the biggest-selling single of all time by a female artist in the UK. Her song 'Believe' was voted the world's eighth favorite song by BBC in 2003.
She has spanned several generations during her active years; Cher has a Grammy Award, an Emmy Award, an Academy Award, three Golden Globe Awards, a Cannes Film Festival Award, a special CFDA Fashion Award, and a Kennedy Center Honors prize, among other honors.
Cher is the only artist to date who has a number-one single on a Billboard chart in each decade from the 1960s to the 2010s. She has held U.S. Billboard Hot 100 number-one singles over the longest period of time in history - 33 years between - I Got You Babe – in 1965, and – Believe until 1999.
Up to date, she sold over 100 million records worldwide and is one of the best-selling music artists, she is still very active in her career despite being in her seventies, has a political voice, is a known philanthropist, is a social activist.
Of her most prominent and famous roles where she combined her singing, as well as acting prowess is the film – Mama Mia, Here We Go Again, The Mask, Stuck on You, among others.
Of her most important real-life active involvements is in the prevention of HIV as well as AIDS.
Cher is returning to film in 2018 with upcoming projects among which is - Dancing Queen and a redo of the film - Mama Mia! Here We Go Again.
