Def Leppard, an English rock band, was formed as part of the new wave of British heavy metal movement (NWOBHM) in the year 1977 in Sheffield. The band members consist of Rick Savage, Joe Elliott, Vivian Campbell, Rick Allen, and Phil Collen, They are together since 1992 and formed the band's longest serving line-up.
The early years of Def Leppard all started in the year 1977 when Rick Savage, Pete Willis, and Tony Kenning were all students at the Tapton School in Sheffield, and then their band was known as Atomic Mass. Once Joe Elliot tried out for being a part of the band and when he was auditioned, it got decided that he be the lead singer.
The band name was suggested by Elliot who had earlier it named Deaf Leopard, but then a little change in spelling made and got it modified to “Def Leppard” so that the earlier name doesn’t seem like that of a punk band.
At the beginning of their musical career, the band managed a three-song release named "The Def Leppard E.P" After one of the tracks “Getcha Rocks Off” released, the track got so famous and was given an extensive airtime by the renowned DJ John Peel from BBC Radio 1. It was kind of touted as the champion of punk rock and new wave music.
The band had a loyal fan base among the British hard rock and heavy metal fans, and the people saw them as the revival of the British heavy metal movement. This growing popularity got noticed by the major label Phonogram/Vertigo (named as Mercury Records in the US) and they signed a record deal with the band.
The debut album of Def Leppard got released on 14 March 1980 named "On Through the Night". The band hit to the Top 15 in the UK, and also many of the fans noticed that the band was trying to improvise their style and meet to the likings of the American audience as the album contained songs like “Hello America”. Later on, they also were doing musical tours with the American artists in American lands. This was filled with hatred by the fans that showed their displeasure at the Reading Festival when they were attacked by urine filled beer cans and bottles.
Their second studio album "High ‘n’ Dry" was released in the year 1981 and the track from the album “Bringin’ On the Heartbreak” became a raging hit, and it was one of the first metal videos to be played on MTV in the year 1982. Their next studio album "Pyromania" was released in January 1983, “Photograph” and “Rock of Ages” were two lead singles from the album which became a runaway hit. The album ranked number 384 on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. Their fourth album "Hysteria" released in 1987 and topped in both the UK and U.S charts. It eventually got certified with 12x platinum for sales above 12 million copies in the US, and 25 million copies worldwide. The album included seven hit singles, among them the song "Love Bites" reached to the No.1 position in the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 Chart. Their greatest-hits album "Vault" got released in the year 1995, and it featured the UK hit “When Love & Hate Collide”.
Def Leppard is being considered as one of the best-selling music artists in the world with over 100 million records sold worldwide. They won two AMA’s and two albums with RIAA diamond certification. They were the inaugural VH1 Rock Honors inductees on 31 May 2006, together with Kiss, Judas Priest, and Queen.
