Sir Elton Hercules John was born as Reginald Kenneth Dwight on the 25 of March 1947 at Pinner, Middlesex, England. A several Grammy Award winner, Elton John is not only a singer, but he is also a pianist and a composer. He was raised in a council house by his maternal grandparents and by the time he became 17, he quit school to pursue a career in the music industry. As his father’s family were very much keen on buying records of very famous musicians, it exposed John to popular singers and musicians of that time.
Elton John was a prodigal son who made his exposure to the piano at a very young age of three and when he was seven years old, he performed at various parties and family get-togethers. He took up formal piano lessons since then and continued his passion when he also won a junior scholarship to the Royal Academy of Music.
His collaboration with the lyricist Bernie Taupin as his songwriting partner from the year 1967 to present has made the duo collaborate on more than 30 albums. He has a career spanning of five decades and of which he sold more than 300 million records. He is one of the best-selling music artists in the world.
More than fifty of his chartbusters are in the Top 40 hits which include seven No.1 US albums consecutively, 58 Billboard Top 40 singles of which 27 were Top 10, four No. 2 spot and nine No.1 spots. He was just unstoppable and unbreakable. He managed to get at least one song on the Billboard Top 100 for a whopping 31 years consecutively.
He rewrote the song “Candle in the Wind” which was solely dedicated to the great Late Princess Diana who had an untimely death during a car accident. That album sold over 33 million copies worldwide. In the history of UK and US singles charts, this song became the best-selling single.
Other than singing and composing music, Elton John has done a wee bit of acting in films and also producing records. His love for football got him to own a Watford Football Club from the year 1976 to 1987 and 1997 to 2002. Being the Honorary Life President of the club, Elton John had a stand at the club’s home stadium which is named after him since 2014.
During his professional time, Elton John received five Grammy Awards, five Brit Awards which also included in that as the Brits Icon in 2013 for his ‘lasting impact on British Culture’, an Academy Award, a Golden Globe Award, a Tony Award, a Disney Legends award, Kennedy Centre Honors, and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
Elton John has been named as the Order of the British Empire in 1996 and was ordained the Knight Bachelor by Queen Elizabeth II for services to music and charitable services in the year 1997. He has been at a number of royal events and performed for the funeral of Princess Diana, Palace Party and the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee Concert.
He was married to Renate Blauel in 1984 and has two kids but then he had been openly gay and had a relationship with David Furnish. By the time Gay marriage got legalized, Elton John wed Furnish on 21st December 2014. His philanthropy includes the establishment of Elton John Aids Foundation which has risen over $200 US million dollars.
