Journey is an American rock band which was formed in the year 1973 in San Francisco, which all started with the former members of the band Santana and Frumious Bandersnatch. There were many members who were a part of the group and is comprised of past and present members who were the heart and soul of the band. The past members like George Tickner, Robert Fleischman, Aynsley Dunbar, Gregg Rolie, Steve Perry, Randy Jackson, Steve Augeri, Jeff Scott Soto, Deen Castronovo were all taken over by the present members like Neal Schon, Ross Valory, Steve Smith, Jonathan Cain and Arnel Pineda.
This band all began when they had actually intended to serve as a backup group for artists around the Bay Area. Soon when things began to seem good and they garnered a little fame, the band quickly planned to abandon the backup group tagline and they focused on a certain genre of music which could just be catchy and adaptable to the listeners, and that is how jazz fusion got introduced to their works.
Their first public appearance was during the New Year’s Eve of 1973 at the Winterland Ballroom. A new line-up of artists revived the band and they made a welcoming debut at The Great American Music Hall which gave them a chance to secure a recording contract with Columbia Records.
Their debut album "Journey" got released in the year 1975 and soon after the release, rhythm guitarist Tickner left the band. At that time, the band was getting set for their second studio album "Look into the Future", it was released in January 1976. Both the albums did not achieve any significant sales and whatever attempts were being made, the band could not achieve that much needed commercial success.
The band tasted success when Columbia Records requested them to have a change in their style of music. Also, there were great changes in the band members with some exiting from the group and some becoming a part of it. After going through a lot of failures, the band tasted success post-1978 and they were at their peak till 1987. During this fruitful ten years, a series of hit songs got released which included songs like “Don’t Stop Believin’”, it was released in 1981. The greatest thing about this song is that in the year 2009, the track became the top-selling track in the history of iTunes. The studio album "Escape" from the band reached to the No.1 spot on the Billboard 200. The popular single “Open Arms” got released by them as well. In the year 1983, the studio album "Frontiers" became very successful which reached the No.2 position. The songs got so successful that the band got highly recognized in the United Kingdom where it reached the No.6 position on the UK Albums Chart.
They are named as one of America’s most beloved commercial rock/pop band. According to the Recording Industry Association of America, they are the 25th best-selling band, about 48 million album sales only in the United States. Worldwide, the band Journey has made a record sale of over 75 million. Their songs are still played on rock radio stations and also ranks 96th on 100 Greatest Artists of All Time. They were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
