The Los Angeles Chargers are a professional American football team competing in the National Football League as a member club of the league’s AFC West Division. They are based in the Greater Los Angeles Area. The club began to play as a charter member of the AFL, and the team spent its first season in L.A and then moving to San Diego in 1961 to become San Diego Chargers.
The Chargers joined the NFL because of the AFL-NFL merger in 1970. The Chargers then used to play their home games at Qualcomm Stadium. Return to the relocation of the Chargers to L.A for the year 2017 was announced where the team would further play their home games at the StubHub Center, Carson, California.
The team is owned by Alex Spanos, a self-made billionaire who founded the A.G. Spanos Companies. He purchased it from the hotel heir Barron Hilton when the team named itself to San Diego Chargers. The team is headquartered in Costa Mesa, California and their colors are Navy Blue, Powder Blue, White, and Gold. The team, which used to adorn a logo featuring a horse head, lightning bolt and the word ‘Chargers’ is now just an italicized initial of L.A joined together as a lightning bolt. The Chargers have a fight song named ‘San Diego Super Chargers’ which was relatively a disco version, and then it got replaced with a non-disco cover version by the then new owner Alex Spanos. The Boltman is the official mascot of the L.A Chargers, and their fanbase is named as the Big Bolts.
The Chargers had won one AFL title in the year 1963 and had reached the American Football League playoffs five times and the AFL Championship four times before the team got joined in the NFL as part of the merger. It has been 43 years since then, and the Chargers have made 4 appearances in the AFC Championship game and 13 trips to the playoffs. And later in the year 1994 season, the Chargers lost to San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XXIX finals (lost to 49-26). It was a very disappointing loss for the team as they were trying hard to make through.
The Chargers went through their dark times when they went through the death of their former players soon after the XXIX Super Bowl Championship. Rodney Culver, a running back, was an aspiring player who lost his life along with his wife to a ValuJet Flight 592 plane crash on May 11, 1996. Their family is survived by their two daughters. The other player is David Griggs, a linebacker, who lost his life a month later by a car accident in Florida. These two losses in some way became a decline for the team.
Even though the Chargers weren’t victorious much, but they have made their way into the Pro Football Hall of Fame with the induction of seven players and one coach from the team. Lance Alworth, Dan Fouts, Fred Dean, Charlie Joiner, Ron Mix, Kellen Winslow, Junior Seau and Head Coach- General manager Sid Gillman are the honorable Hall of Famers.
