The AL is highly successful since 1988 and they won 21 of 28 with 1 tie. The opening Major League All-Star Game was played at Comiskey Park in Chicago. The game generally takes place on either the second or third Tuesday in July every year. All-star game is intended to mark a symbolic midpoint in the MLB season.
In 1945, the All-Star game didn’t occur due to Second World War and strict war time restrictions on travel. The City of San Diego and the San Diego Padres is expected to host the 87th MLB All-Star Game at Petco Park. Both the teams have 34 players including 21 position players and 13 pitchers. MLB players, managers and coaches are now allowed to vote and assist to select the backup players and pitchers.
In the NL, fans pick the eight starters. Players, coaches, and managers select eight backups for each position, besides five starting pitchers and three relievers. The NL All-Star team manager picks the rest of the players to take the list to 33. In the AL, fans vote for nine slots by reason of the nominated hitter position. The players, managers, and coaches also cast their vote for nine positions. The AL All-Star team manager will decide on the rest of the pitchers and position players to take the list to 33.
MLB All-star game Most Valuable Player (MVP) Award was introduced since 1962. MVP is an award which is given to the most exceptional player in every year's MLB All-Star Game. Willie Mays (NL) of the Los Angeles Dodgers was the first player to win MVP award. He is also the first player to win more than one All-Star Game MVP Award (1963, 1968). Five players have won the MVP award of MLB All-Star Game twice including Willie Mays (1963, 1968), Steve Garvey (1974, 1978), Gary Carter (1981, 1984), Cal Ripken, Jr. (1991, 2001), and Mike Trout (2014, 2015).
The venue for All-Star Game is selected by an MLB selection committee. The decisive factors for picking the venue are depended on various factors including cities with new parks, cities who have not hosted the game in a long time and so on. St. Petersburg (Tampa Bay Rays) is said to be the only present MLB city that has not hosted an MLB All-Star Game so far. As of 2015, the Major League Baseball franchises have never hosted an All-Star Game are the Tampa Bay Rays and the Miami Marlins.
