New Kids On The Block is a boy band from Boston, Massachusetts, and it has been active from as early as 1984. At that time, the members of the band were the brothers Jordon Wright and Jonathan Wright, Joey Macintyre, Danny Wood, Donnie Wahlberg, as well as Mark Wahlberg and Jamie Kelly. But it was Donnie Wahlberg who was the first member of the band. Whereas Mark Wahlberg left quite as soon as the band began to take shape, he was replaced by Jamie Kelly who also did not stay long and that was when Joey McIntyre, the youngest member of the band came and stayed.
The band is sometimes initialized as NKOTB and has specialized in the genres Blue-eyed soul, Pop, Hip Hop, Rock and Pop, and R&B.
Of course, we all know Marky Mark and the Funky Funks which was one of the band’s associated acts, as well as other associated acts with bands like BackstreetBoys, Pussycat Dolls, Nick and Knight, Lady Gaga, among others.
Rising to fame, the band enjoyed that success from the late 80s up to the early 90s when they won the American Music Awards twice in 1990, were nominated for the Grammy Awards again in 1990, and were nominated for favorite pop/rock album also in the same year.
The band went on to enjoy their success which went worldwide with the millions of records they sold. Their debut album 'New Kids On The Block' got released in 1986, followed by 'Hanging Tough' in 1988 in which they changed their style and adopted more direction as well as material in their songs. The single – Please Don’t Go Girl – came as No. 10 on the Billboard Hot 100 singles.
Due to television appearances, the band New Kids On The Block became known for its great visual appeal which in turn increased their success as well as record selling. They tapped on this success by releasing a holiday album 'Merry, Merry Christmas' in 1989, from which the single – This One Is for Children– went on to be another Top 10 and Double Platinum. The proceeds of this album were dedicated to the United Cerebral Palsy. At the same time, the album Hanging Tough was still on the charts, and strangely enough, went on to stay on the charts for an unprecedented 132 weeks; this was the first in history for an album to ever stay this long.
Two other albums followed 'Step By Step' in 1990 and 'Face The Music' in 1994. Somehow, the band disbanded after that even though they were performing nearly 100 concerts a year and were one of the highest earning tours of the decade.
The New Kids On The Block came back together in 2007, secretly but were officially reunited in 2012 and released their first album in 14 years 'The Block' which debuted at Number 1 on the Billboard Top Pop and Number 2 with Billboard 200.
The band has been active since then, providing shows, touring, and releasing EPs. Their fans get to enjoy the shows they give in various venues, and New Kids on The Block received a star from the Hollywood walk of fame in 2014.
