To support the album, Reznor assembled a band and toured for several years, with notable performances at the Lollapalooza music festival and others.

Band members or backing musicians are not permanent but are gathered for a tour or a live music show, except in 2016 when Atticus Ross became a permanent member. Some members that have participated repeatedly or left a mark are Robin Finck, Alessandro Cortini, Ilan Rubin, Chris Vrenna, Ron Musarra, Richard Patrick, James Woolley, Danny Lohner, Jeff Ward, Charlie Clouser, among others.

Disputes arose with TVT Records concerning his type of music and it was a while before he reached an agreement. Joining Interscope Records they gave him his own label "Nothing". From there the band released "Broken"  in 1992-1993, "The Downward Spiral" in 1994 - 1997, and "The Fragile" in 1999, and has record sales exceeding 20 million copies worldwide with 10 million in the US alone.

Reznor had videos for songs on Broken banned for their violent and unsettling content, including "Happiness in Slavery".  But the track "Wish" got him his first Grammy for best metal performance, while a live recording of Happiness in Slavery got him a second Grammy in 1995.

Nine Inch Nails was nominated for 13 Grammy awards and winning two for the songs from Broken. Reznor has been depicted by the Times Magazine as one of the most influential people in 1997 while Spin Magazine described him as "The Most Vital Artist in Music". Several albums were released over the years, some of those are "The Fragile" in 1999-2003, "With Teeth" in 2004-2006, "Year Zero" in 2006-2007, "Ghosts I-IV" in 2009, and "Hesitation Marks" in 2012-2015.

For a while, it was thought that the band would not release any new work but in late 2016 an EP called "Not the Actual Events" released, along with reissues of Broken, The Downward Spiral, and The Fragile, with reissues of With Teeth, Year Zero, and The Slip. Later, "The Fragile – Deviations 1" was released with tracks that had never been heard before.

Nine Inch Nails have been known to compose songs and track music for games and films of which "The Social Network" and "The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" are award winners.

Lately, the band released its album "Bad Witch" in June 2018, so they are going strong with the type of music that at its initiation was simply unacceptable.
