Philip David Charles Collins is an English drummer, singer-songwriter, record producer, and actor. He was born on 30 January 1951 in Chiswick, London, England. From the young age of five, he has been playing the drums and then went on until he completed drama school. This was the beginning for him, propelling him into the acting career as a child actor with varied roles. It was not until 1970 that he changed careers and gravitated to music. It was then that he joined the rock band “Genesis” as a drummer in 1970 and became their lead singer in 1975.
He began a solo career in 1980, and between 1982 and 1989, Collins scored three UK and seven US number one singles in his solo career. At this point, he had become a drummer, songwriter, singer, instrumentalist, and record producer. Some of his most prominent genres are; pop, soft rock, progressive rock, art rock, and jazz fusion.
Having been featured in the album "Nursery Cryme" with Genesis in 1971, his next prominent work was as a solo artist and that was when he debuted with several successful albums that came consecutively such as his first studio album "Face Value", second solo album "Hello, I Must Be Going”, etc. And for the period from 1984 to 1996, his most successful albums "No Jacket Required", "But Seriously", and "Both Sides" were got released.
All in all, he has eight studio album that has sold approximately 150 million copies worldwide making him one of the best-selling artists in the world. He is one of two artists that have sold over 100 million records worldwide both as a solo artist and as a member of a band.
Phil Collins won eight Grammy Awards, six Brit Awards - winning Best British Male three times - two Golden Globe Awards, one Academy Award, and a Disney Legend Award. He has received six Ivor Novello Awards from the British Academy of Songwriters, Composers, and Authors, including the International Achievement Award. He also received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1999, and then was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 2003, the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame as a member of Genesis in 2010, the Modern Drummer Hall of Fame in 2012, and the Classic Drummer Hall of Fame in 2013.
It was in 2006 that he had his reunion with Genesis and ultimately the album "Going Back" got released. But this was followed by retirement from the beginning of 2015, but his eight albums were being remastered by Warner Music Group. By mid-2016, all eight of his studio albums were remastered and reissued as deluxe editions with a bonus disc, demos and live versions of some of his songs and he participated in this endeavor.
His retirement did not last long and by October of the same year he was back and working on his autobiography "Not Dead Yet" which was released in October 2016. He then started on a tour named after his autobiography in June 2017 and is still ongoing.
Through his career, Phil Collins has garnered a lot of support, fans, as well as criticism. But he is still here so that says he is a voice to listen to.
