The San Francisco Giants are an American Baseball team from San Francisco, California. The Giants compete in MLB (Major League Baseball) as a member club of National League (NL) in the west division. Founded in the year 1883, the Giants are one of the longest established and most successful professional baseball teams. It has won the most games of any team in the history of American Baseball.
Founded by millionaire John Day and co-founder Jim Mutrie who was an amateur baseball player, they were then known as the Gothams, but that name was changed to their present name just three years later. The team floundered for several years until John McGraw was signed as player and manager in 1902. He kept the position of manager till 1932, giving the team long and successful three decades and the first World Series in 1905. At present, the team is owned by San Francisco Baseball Associates with Bruce Bochy as manager.
The team was first based in New York at the Polo Grounds but has moved and settled in San Francisco since 1958; first at the Seals Stadium, then a year later they moved to Candlestick Park where they remained until they moved to AT&T Park in 2000 and till the present day.
All in all, it is known as the team that has one of the greatest numbers of achievements and titles. That has to be true with 23 pennants since their initiation and up to 2014. But that is not all, they have won the world series title eight times. They won it in 1905, 1921, 1922, 1933, but then they had to wait three decades before getting the title again in 1954 and did not get it again until 2010, 2012, and 2014. As for the West Division Title, they have been quite consistent and gained it in 1971, 1987, 1989, 1997, 2000, 2003, 2010, and 2012.
This team has seen some of the great players in baseball and some of the most recent who have made it to the Baseball Hall of Fame are; Robby Thompson, Thom Haller, Jeff Kent, Shawn Estes, Marvin Benard, Jason Schmidt. Needless to say, these are just a tiny fraction of the Hall of Fame players from the Giants team.
The San Francisco Giants have acquired over the years some of the greatest rivalries in the history of baseball. The most prominent one is the rivalry with the Los Angeles Dodgers and dates back to the time when the two teams were in New York and is regarded as one of the most intense rivalries in American Baseball since the rivalry has surpassed mere athletics and moved to causalities as well as moving cross country together to once more continue the rivalry in California where the Giants are in San Francisco and the Dodgers are in Los Angeles.
This team has shown what the fight for staying in the limelight is like, and what a show they have given us through the successful as well as the down years. To say the least, they are a great and interesting team.
