The Seattle Mariners are an American Professional Baseball team from Seattle, Washington. The Mariners compete in MLB (Major League Baseball) as a member of the American League (AL) West Division. The team was first established in 1977 as an expansion team in the AL West division. Their first home base was Kingdome and that was until 1999 and from then to the present day, their base is at Safeco Field.
Owned by the Baseball Club of Seattle and represented by CEO John Stanton, the Seattle Mariners have Scott Servais as the manager while the general manager is Jerry Dipoto. Due to the abundance of marine culture in the city of Seattle, the team acquired its name as the Mariners. They have retained the name even though they are sometimes nicknamed as the M’s.
Unfortunately, this is a team that has been in the field for quite a number of years and has still to show its strength. At the core, it can be seen that they can do it since they showed success when they won their first Division Championship and defeated the New York Yankees in the American League Division Series in the year 1995 with a game that not only served as a reason to preserve baseball in Seattle but is an iconic moment in the team’s history and a building stone for the future . That is as well as the fact that in 2001 the Seattle Mariners won 116 games, as such setting a record for American League for most wins in a single season.
The Mariners have also been winners of the West Division Title three times in the years 1995, 1997, and 2001, but they have never won a World Series, a pennant, and have also never played in a World Series. That is not to say that the Seattle Mariners are not equipped with players; in fact, the team has quite a number of players that are in the Seattle Mariners Hall of Fame namely; Pat Gillick, Goose Gossage, Rickey Henderson, Randy Johnson, among others. We do not want to forget Ken Griffey Jr., nicknamed Junior or The Kid who played 22 years in Major League Baseball and spent most of them with the Mariners.
The team has also been known to make a lot of season records such as Highest Batting Average: .372, Ichiro Suzuki in 2004, Most Runs: 141, Alex Rodriguez in 1996, Most Hits: 262, Ichiro Suzuki in 2004 and a Major League Record, Highest Slugging %: .674, Ken Griffey Jr. in 1994, Highest On-Base %: .479, Edgar Martínez in 1995, Highest On-Base Plus Slugging: 1.107, Edgar Martínez in 1995, Most Doubles: 54, Alex Rodriguez in 1996, the list goes a long way.
Even though this team has not seen many awards or wins but they show through their players that they are rich in talent since the players not only achieve unprecedented records but they also have career records that are numerous and registered to many players’ names be it in MLB or AL or in the games themselves. It is also a well-loved team rich in fans, their glory will definitely come and soon.
