Shawn Peter Raul Mendes, known as Shawn Mendes, was born in 1998 in Toronto, Ontario, Canada to a father of Portuguese descent and an English mother. He was barely 15 when he first started posting cover videos on the social video sharing app named Vince in 2013 and picking up millions of followers in a matter of months. From there he became known for his six-second snippets of renditions of many popular songs.
It was Andrew Gertler, the artist manager, who discovered Shawn in January 2014, bringing him to Island Records where he released his first single "Life of the Party" in June 2014. He is the youngest artist to compose his own debut album in the Top 25 with a debut song on the Billboard Hot 100, debuting at number 24 for the week ending July 12, 2014, at 15 years of age.
At the beginning of his singing, Shawn toured as a member of the Magcon Tour alongside other young artists. Shawn also was on a nationwide tour with Austin Mahone and released his debut EP in July, with a debut album that came out later in 2014.
With the onset of 2015, Shawn Mendes released his album "Handwritten" which debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 chart with 106, 000 copies sold in its first week. From that album, the single 'Stitches' got to number one in the United Kingdom and the Top 10 in the United States and Canada. It peaked at number four on the US Billboard Hot 100, becoming his first top 10 single in the US and reaching the top position on the Mainstream Top 40 chart.
He went on to release his next album "Illuminate" in 2016, and it was at this time as well that he started his acting career, and he also went on to sign with a modeling agency. Not only that but he toured as a promotion for his album; a tour that started in 2016 and ended in 2017 - 'The Shawn Mendes World Tour'.
He then went on to release several singles prior to his next album, the singles were all unmitigated successes, and were followed by his self-titled album "Shawn Mendes" which then debuted at number one in Canada, making it his third number one album in the home country. But it also debuted at number one on the US Billboard 200 which made Shawn Mendes the third youngest artist to collect three number-one albums in a career time span that can only be called short.
Shawn has made his songs to address low self-esteem, depression, and self-harm; he has not made a secret of his personal experience with similar issues. Launching a campaign that was inspired by his lyrics is also one of his philanthropic ventures. Not only that but after witnessing the destruction caused by the earthquake in Mexico, he created a relief fund in conjunction with the red cross.
For one so young, he has established a strong base for his career as well as having a hand in issues that aid people.
