The St. Louis Cardinals are an American professional baseball team from St. Louis, Missouri. The Cardinals compete in MLB (Major League Baseball) as a member of the National League (NL) Central Division. Their home base has been Busch Stadium since 2006, but of course, they have moved around a bit before settling down.
The team was established in 1882 by entrepreneur Chris von der Ahe, they were then known as St. Louis Brown Stockings, later becoming the St. Louis Browns and after that, they became the St. Louis Perfectos, and that was in 1899. They became the St. Louis Cardinals in 1900 and have retained the name to the present day. The present owner is William DeWitt Jr., with Mike Matheny as manager of the team.
The St. Louis Cardinals are an old and successful team that has actually managed to win 11 World Series Championships with the first in 1926 and the last in 2011; the wins have been nicely spaced to show the continuing strength and presence of this team and this makes it the second in line in Major League Baseball just behind the New York Yankees, but they are the first in line in National League. They have acquired 19 National League pennants and as such, they rank third in NL history with the first pennant in 1926 and the latest in 2013, again the pennants acquired have been uniformly spaced, another proof for the consistency of the team. That is not all, the St. Louis Cardinals have won 10 Central Division titles from 1996 to 2015 as well as 3 East Division Titles.
As far as the players of this team, 16 different players have won a total of 20 Most Valuable Player (MVP) awards, the latest being Albert Pujols in 2009. It is to be noted that Albert Pujols and Stan Musial have the most MVP awards since they each have 3 awards. The Cy Young Award has also found its way to the Cardinals with Bob Gibson in 1968 and 1970, and Chris Carpenter in 2005. There have also been Rookies of the year Todd Worrell in 1986, and Albert Pujols in 2001, and there are still more to mention.
As for the prowess of the players of the Cardinals; 20 players have hit for the cycle, the latest was Mark Grudzielanek in 2005 and team pitchers have thrown 10 No-hitters. Of course, a large number of players are in the Hall of Fame among whom are Bob Gibson, Stan Musial, John McGraw, to mention but a few.
A team with a history like the St. Louis Cardinals is bound to be some rivalries along the way and the most prominent one being the rivalry with the Chicago Cubs. It is an old rivalry that has gone on through the years especially since both teams are located in cities that are along one interstate road. What is refreshing in this rivalry is that it has only been a rivalry of games and wins that have helped drive both teams forward.
A team that is rich in history, as well as achievements, St. Louis Cardinals are still going strong and a pride to its fans and families.
