The Chainsmokers American musical duo consists of Andrew Taggart and Alex Pall specializing in EDM, pop, and electropop genres. The EDM pop duo has been active from 2012 to present and made their musical career breakthrough in 2014 by their song #Selfie which made it to the top 20 single in multiple countries. However, the debut EP, ‘Bouquet’ was released in October 2015, and featured singles such as ‘Roses’ that made it to the Top 10 on the US Billboard 100. The other hit single featured on the debut album, ‘Don’t Let Me Down’ made it to the top 5 single on the US Billboard 100 and made them achieve the Grammy Award for Best Dance Recording during the 59th awards ceremony. Furthermore, ‘Closer’ also featured on the same album became their first No.1 single on the chart. Their second EP, ‘Collage’ was later released in November 2016, and subsequently released their debut studio album, ‘Memories…Do Not Open’ later in 2017. The Chainsmokers musical duo has also won the American Music Award, as well as five iHeartRadio Music Awards.
Alexander ‘Alex” Pall was born on May 16, 1985, in Westchester County, New York, and his father was an art dealer while his mother was a housewife. Andrew “Drew” Taggart on the other hand, was born on December 31, 1989, in Freeport, Maine and his father sold prosthetics while his mother was a teacher. He turned onto EDM at a tender age of fifteen while abroad in Argentina where David Guetta, Trentemoller, and Daft Punk introduced him to music. He describes the Chainsmokers music as blurring the lines between pop music, indie, hip-hop, and dance music. Much of the duos musical influence came from Pharrell Williams and Deadmau5, and their acts have greatly been inspired by songs such as Explosions in the Sky, Blink-182, Taking Back Sunday, Max Martin, Taylor Swift, and The Xx.
The musical duo both has a background in music, and both studied music in college. Andrew Taggart studied music at Syracuse University’s celebrated Bandier Program for Music and Entertainment Industries. Alex Pall, on the other hand, studied at New York University majoring in art history and music business. When they came together in 2012, Alex Pall was working in New York trying his hand as a professional DJ while Andrew Taggart was working as an aspiring music producer immediately after graduating from college, as well as interning at Interscope Records.
While being interviewed for television by ABC News Nightline in October 2016, the reporter Nick Watt asked the duo about the origin of their name, and Alex Pall replied that he enjoyed smoking weed and that just how the domain opened. Whether it is out of stupidity, laziness, or through market research, the Chainsmokers have managed to create beer pong tournament background music that provides nothing more than repackaged EDM tropes for Spotify plays. And this is all they care for just making Billboard lists, which they did for multiple weeks with three songs in the year 2016.
