Snow Patrol is a relatively young band that has originated in Dundee, Scotland in the year 1994 at the University of Dundee by Gary Lightbody, Michael Morrison, and Mark McClelland, and the band was then called Shrug. There followed a time when they became the Polarbear, but just for a short time and a name dispute had them changing the name again to Snow Patrol – the final change.

Gary Lightbody- vocals, guitar, Nathan Connolly- guitar, backing vocals, Paul Wilson- bass guitar, backing vocals, Jonny Quinn- drums, and Johnny McDaid - piano, guitar, backing vocals; are the present members of the band. The band represents several genres; Indie rock, Alternative rock, power pop, post-Britpop, etc.

With their renaming in 1997, Snow Patrol settled in Glasgow and released their debut album "Songs for Polarbears" in 1998. The album was a success critically but did not garner much commercially. And, the same was the case for the next album "When It's All Over We Still Have to Clear Up".

It was not until 2002 when Jazz Summers acted as manager and publisher that the band started to be recognized commercially, especially with the release of "Final Straw" in 2003. It was also at that time that Nathan Connelly joined the band as a guitarist. Even though this album went along the same theme as the first two, but it debuted at No. 5 on UK Albums Chart. Some of the singles from the album "Run", "Chocolate", "Spitting Games", and "How to be Dead" made it to the Singles Charts or recorded as top songs.

With this taste of success, the band went ahead, and Final Straw was released in the US. From there Snow Patrol released "Eyes Open" in 2006. During the recording of the album, Mark McClelland was replaced by Paul Wilson. The album was a success with the song "Chasing Cars" making it to the download and pop charts, especially after it was used in the television series Grey’s Anatomy.

Several more albums followed with equal if not, more successes, "A Hundred Million Suns" in 2008, "Fallen Empires" in 2010, "Greatest Hits" in 2013, and "Wildness" in 2018 to present.

Chasing cars got recognized as Song of The Decade and were also stated to be the most widely played song by the PPL in the UK. In 2010, Snow Patrol won the Heritage Award for Music by PRS. That is not all since the pub where the band performed its first gig erected a plaque in pride. Other awards won by the band are; BMI Award – 7 times, Hot Press Awards – 2 times, IFPI Platinum Europe Awards – 5 times, Ivor Novello Award – 1 time, Meteor Music Awards – 6 times, Q Awards – 1 time. This makes a total of 25 awards, as for the nominations those have reached 51 so far.

Snow Patrol has set up a publishing company for up and coming artists and is also known to take an active part in charity deals.

Snow Patrol Band along with Universal as its own publishers have influenced the music scene in Belfast quite positively and will continue to do so.
