New York Mets are one of the American professional baseball teams from New York City borough of Queens. They participate in the Major League Baseball (MLB) as a member team from the National League East Division (NL). The team was founded in 1962 as a replacement of the departed teams of NL (Brooklyn Dodgers and New York Giants). From the Shea Stadium from 1964 to 2008, they have been at Citi Field from 2009 to present. The New York Mets are partly owned by Fred Wilpon with 52% of the shares while the rest of the shares jointly owned by several others. Mickey Callaway is the current Manager of the team.
The team has only two World Series Championship titles to their name, in 1969 they defeated the Baltimore Orioles to win the championship, and in 1986 they overcome the challenges posed by the Boston Red Sox to win the title. The team has its mark in the East Division Titles with six titles to date namely; 1969, 1973, 1986, 1988, 2006, and 2015.
The New York Mets have also acquired quite a number of NL Pennants to their name in 1969, 1973, 1986, 2000, and the latest Pennant to date is in 2015.
The Mets went through a difficult few years from 2001 till 2004, but hiring the new General Manager Omar Minaya had great impacts as he turning the franchise around by hiring new pitchers, finding a new manager, players, among other moves that got the team through that difficult time and into the 2005 season. Notably, the team went on to score a record above .500 in four games and a title in 2006.
With pride, the New York Mets have quite a number of their players inducted into the Baseball Hall of Fame, namely Roberto Alomar, Tom Glavine, Eddie Murray, Mike Piazza, Nolan Ryan, Tom Seaver, Duke Snider, to mention just a few. And, in 2012 pitcher R.A. Dickey won the NL Cy Young Award.
It is interesting to know that the Mets have acquired quite a number of rivalries along the way, the most talked-of being the New York Mets – New York Yankees rivalry. It is an exhibition rivalry, and the two teams have met for games six times each season since 1999 but only four times since 2013. They also have a rather old rivalry with the Atlanta Braves that dates back as far as 1969 but did not really get heated except in the 1990s when they were placed in the same division. Still, it is an exhibition of prowess only.
One of the hottest rivalries in NL history is the rivalry between the Mets and the Philadelphia Phillies from 2006 to 2008. This rivalry was not just stayed in the baseball games but went as far as brawls between the two teams.
As one of the two teams based in New York, the New York Mets are always in the public eye and they have given their fans many interesting games over the years. With the onset of the 2018 season, the Mets 57th season, they will surely provide even more entertainment for their fans, be it in the games or the interaction with other teams along the way.
