Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim are an American professional baseball team from Anaheim, California. They play in the Major League Baseball (MLB) as an American League (AL) West division member. Founded in 1961, the Angels were first set up as an expansion team in 1961 by Gene Autry the team’s first owner for 36 years to Pacific Coast League (PCL). Los Angeles Angels played their home games at Los Angeles' Wrigley Field which had formerly been the home of the PCL.
When the Walt Disney Company got control of the team in 1997, it renovated Anaheim Stadium. The City of Anaheim contributed to the renovation with a lease stating that the stadium and team contain the word "Anaheim". The team then became the Anaheim Angels while the stadium became Angel Stadium of Anaheim. And, in 2005, the owner Arturo Moreno added "Los Angeles", then the team was renamed as the Los Angeles Angels of Anaheim.
Angels' founder and owner, Gene Autry, never saw his Angels win a World Series in his 36 years. Years went by while the team experienced many losses just a few steps away from American League pennants. The Angels' first World Series Championship was in 2002, by which time the original owner had died. This was just a beginning of success and in 2009, the Angels won the AL West Division Championship for the third straight season. By 2014 they had won the West Division Championship nine times in all.
But that is not all, Troy Glaus who was then an Angels player got the MVP Award in 2002, during the World Series while Mike Trout got the Major League Player of the year in 2012, 2013 and 2016. Mike also got MLB All-Star Game MVP Award for 2014, 2015 consecutively. The manager Mike Scioscia more than proved himself and got 2002 and 2009 Manager of The Year Award.
As an MLB team, the Los Angeles Angels has more than made its presence felt and they have had their fair share of rivalries over the years. Some of these rivalries are in and outside of their division, they include the New York Yankees, Boston Red Sox, Texas Rangers, Oakland Athletics, and the neighboring Los Angeles Dodgers.
The team has seen some valuable players come and go; among them are Bobby Grich, Dean Chance, Mike Witt, Brian Downing, Don Baylor. Others who made it to the MLB Hall of Fame are; Nolan Ryan, Vladimir Guerrero, Rod Carew – coach.
It is interesting to note that during Disney’s ownership of the team was featured in Air Bud: Seventh Inning Fetch, and TV movie Angels in the Infield among others. The team made other appearances in films that had been remade or filmed especially for them.
The Los Angeles Angels team has made a lot of news and an undaunted fan base that has seen their efforts and backed them through the years. At the same time, fans have given them an attendance that is 2nd in all of MLB, only trailing the New York Yankees. In 2014, the Angels were fifth in the MLB in attendance, with a total of 3,095,935 people.
